Finland to remove VAT exemption for imported purchases

The Finnish government plans to remove a value-added tax (VAT) exemption for small imported online purchases in July, Finland’s Ministry of Finance announced May 6. The country also will make VAT payable on sales valued at EUR 22 (USD 26.77) or less that are imported from outside the European Union.

The applicable legislative amendments now await the president’s review.

Finland has not collected VAT before on sales valued at EUR 22 or less if the goods were imported from outside the EU, the ministry said. It has collected VAT on small purchases made within the EU, however.

The move is intended to level the competitive playing field for companies within the EU, the ministry said. The ministry also noted that changes also will be made to distance selling of goods within the EU.
