EU Member States agree to defer start date of e-commerce VAT rules

EU Member State representatives on Coreper (the Permanent Representatives Committee) today reached a preliminary agreement to extend by six months the start date of the EU’s new VAT regime applicable to online companies.

The rules will become applicable on July 1, 2021, instead of January 1, 2021.

The postponement is expected to be formally adopted by the Council without further discussion once the text has undergone a legal and linguistic review.

The new rules on VAT for electronic commerce were adopted on December 5, 2017. They establish a new mini one stop shop for VAT registration for distance sales from third countries with a value below €150. They also make online platforms liable for collecting VAT on the distance sales that they facilitate.
