Australian bill introduced to require tax reporting by digital platforms

Legislation introduced in Australia’s House of Representatives on August 25 would require digital platform operators to report to the Australian Taxation Office certain information on gig economy transactions on their platforms.

Information to be reported would include identification of sellers conducting transactions through the platforms and associated payment details. The ATO will use the information to ensure sellers on the platforms are complying with their tax obligations.

For platforms related to taxi-type travel services and short-term accommodations, the requirements are proposed to apply from July 1, 2022. For other types of transactions, implementation would start one year later.
