The OECD’s Global Forum launched in April its “Train the Trainer” pilot program – a move to provide local training to African tax auditors and investigators.
The program seeks to raise awareness that administrative assistance is available in cross-border tax matters – particularly in regard to the exchange of information on request, the OECD said. It’s also hoped that local administrations will increase their capacity to use these instruments effectively, it said.
In total, 35 officials from 19 African tax administrations are being trained. The plan is to train more than 500 of their colleagues by the end of 2021, the OECD said.
The program should help African countries improve tax compliance and increase tax revenues, according to the OECD, which noted that many countries are already moving in the right direction. The OECD intends to track their progress in the upcoming Tax Transparency in Africa 2021 report, scheduled for release during the next Africa Initiative meeting set for May 23-26.
The Africa Initiative was created six years ago to help develop a sustainable culture of exchange of information within tax administrations across the continent, the OECD said.
