India’s Ministry of Finance, on June 25, announced that the government will extend excise duty concessions for cars and other vehicles until December 31. The concessions were originally set to expire on June 30.
For small cars motorcycles, scooters, three wheelers, and commercial vehicles, the excise duty is reduced from 12 percent to 8 percent; for mid-segment cars, the duty is reduced from 24 percent to 20 percent; for large cars the duty is reduced from 27 percent to 24 percent; and for SUVs the duty is reduced from 30 percent to 24 percent. Duty is also reduced from 12 percent to 10 percent on items falling under Chapters 84 and 85 of the Central Excise Tariff.
