EU Parliament tax committee supports measures combating MNE tax avoidance

The European Parliament’s committee on tax rulings on June 21 voted in favor of a report calling for new measures to counter multinational corporation tax avoidance.

The report, prepared by co-rapporteurs Michael Theurer (ALDE, DE) and Jeppe Kofod (S&D, DK) calls for establishment of a tax haven blacklist and sanctions against non-cooperative jurisdictions, new rules preventing tax avoidance through use of “patent box” regimes, an EU common consolidated corporate tax base, a code of conduct for banks and tax advisers, tax good governance rules in all EU trade agreements, withholding tax on profits leaving the EU, and an EU public register of beneficial owners of companies.

The report was approved by the committee by a vote of 25 to 6, with 9 abstentions. It will be voted on by the European Parliament during its July session in Strasbourg.
