New Zealand–China tax treaty enters into force

The New Zealand government has announced that the China-New Zealand tax treaty. signed April 1, 2019, entered into force on December 27.

The treaty will be effective in New Zealand for withholding taxes from January 1, 2020, and for other provisions, generally, from income years beginning April 1. 2020. The treaty will be effective in China, generally, from January  1, 2020.

The treaty will not affect relations between New Zealand and Hong Kong which are governed by a separate tax treaty, the New Zealand government said.

China is New Zealand’s largest trading partner.
