New EU Parliament committee on tax rulings will have same mandate as its predecessor

The European Parliament on December 2 voted to create a new committee to investigate tax rulings, specifying that the new committee will have the same mandate as its predecessor, the special committee on tax rulings (TAXE), which delivered its final report November 25.

There were 561 votes for establishing the new committee and approving its members, 69 votes against, and 5 abstentions.

The new committee will operate for six months and will have 45 members. While there was some discussion of limiting the mandate of the successor committee, agreement was eventually reached to continue the new committee on the same terms as its predecessor.

As a result, like its predecessor, the new committee will look into issues such whether EU Member States improperly granted State aid to companies through tax rulings and whether the EU Commission fulfilled its obligations to monitor States in this regard; whether EU States are complying with obligations to exchange tax ruling information; and whether companies operating in Member States are engaged in aggressive tax planning.
