Japan, Argentina sign tax treaty

Japan’s Ministry of Finance on June 27 announced that the governments of Japan and Argentina signed a tax treaty in Osaka.

The treaty aims to eliminate double taxation arising from activity in the two countries.

It also reduces withholding taxes on dividends to 10 percent for companies holding at least 25 percent of voting power for six months and to 15 percent for others.

Withholding tax on interest is reduced to 12 percent and to zero for interest beneficially owned by the governments.

Withholding tax on royalties reduced to 3 percent for the right to use news, 5 percent for use of copyright to literary, artistic, or scientific work, right, and 10 percent for others.

It also allows tax authorities in Japan and Argentina to exchange information about tax matters with each other an assist each other in the collection of tax claims.

The agreement is not yet in force.
