House Ways and Means lawmakers urge US response to France’s digital tax proposal

US House Ways and Means Committee members Suzan DelBene (D-WA) and Darin LaHood (R-IL) on June 19 sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Trade Ambassador Robert Lighthizer urging them to respond to France’s proposal to impose a digital services tax on advertising, online platforms, data transfers.

“The French tax on digital services will disproportionately affect US technology exporters by setting a threshold that effectively carves out all French competitors,” wrote DelBene and LaHood.

“We encourage you to send a strong message to France that the United States agrees global tax rules must be updated for the digital age, but discriminatory taxes against US firms are not an appropriate solution,”  the lawmakers said.
