Hank Gutman joins Ivins, Phillips & Barker

Former Chief of Staff of the Joint Committee on Taxation, Hank Gutman, has joined Ivins, Phillips & Barker, Washington, where he will lead firm’s federal tax policy group.

Gutman, who joins the firm of counsel, took up his new role July 1.

“Hank’s reputation as one of Washington’s preeminent tax lawyers precedes him, and his unrivaled familiarity with tax policy and the Washington tax landscape adds a dimension to the practice that will be invaluable to our clients as they plan for their future in this era of tax uncertainty and potential reform,” said Ivins partner, Les Schneider.

Gutman served in the US Treasury Department’s Office of Tax Policy as an Attorney-Adviser and as Deputy Tax Legislative Counsel from 1977 to 1980, and as Chief of Staff of the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation in 1991. He has also worked in KPMG’s national office, in private practice, and as a full time tax professor at the University of Virginia and University of Pennsylvania.
