Edward Kieswetter has been appointed Commissioner of South African Revenue Service (SARS) commencing May 1, the South African government has announced.
Kieswetter was Deputy Commissioner for SARS between 2004 and 2009, establishing the Large Business Centre and High Net Worth Individual Unit at that time.
He was also Group Chief Executive of Alexander Forbes Group Holdings.
Kieswetter was appointed by a panel comprised of the former Minister of Finance Trevor Manuel and six members and was selected from among six candidates.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed support for the appointment.
“We have every confidence that Mr Kieswetter has the experience, integrity and skills required to turn SARS around by restoring revenue collection, redirecting operations toward innovation, developing future leaders for the organization, and restoring SARS’ credibility and integrity,” Ramaphosa said.
Kieswetter will serve for five years.
