Mark Mazur, director of the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center and a former US Treasury Department assistant secretary for tax policy in the Obama administration, is the Biden administration’s new deputy assistant secretary for tax policy.
His was one of several appointments announced today, hours before the US Senate’s scheduled vote on Janet Yellen’s nomination as the first female Treasury secretary.
In his new role, Mazur will work in Treasury’s Office of Legislative Affairs.
He has worked at Urban-Brookings since 2017, after a five-year stint with the Obama administration’s Office of Tax Policy.
Mazur also has worked for eight years as Director of Research, Analysis, and Statistics for the IRS. His other previous federal government positions include roles with the Congressional Joint Committee on Taxation, the President’s Council of Economic Advisors and the National Economic Council under President Clinton, and the Department of Energy.
Mazur received a B.A. in financial administration from Michigan State University and a master’s degree in economics and a Ph.D. from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business.
