Japan, Slovenia sign treaty to reduce tax on cross-border income

Japan and Slovenia today signed their first tax treaty, Japan’s Ministry of Finance has announced.

The treaty provides for a withholding tax rate of 5 percent on cross-border dividend and royalty payments. The withholding tax rate is five percent for interest, except in the case of interest received by governments and similar entities, in which case it is zero.

The treaty also contains provisions on dispute resolution, calling for arbitration of tax disputes not resolved within two years.

The agreement further provides for exchange of information on tax matters and mutual assistance in the collection of tax claims.

The agreement will enter into force 30 days after each country notifies the other that procedures necessary for the entry into force of the convention have been completed.
