Japan, Russia agree to new tax treaty

Japan and Russian will sign a new tax treaty, Japan’s Ministry of Finance has announced.

The two countries have agreed in principle to a new tax convention to replace the existing tax treaty between Japan and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which entered into force in 1986.

The announcement, made April 28, followed a visit by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to Moscow.

The new tax treaty will introduce provisions designed to reduce the incidence of double taxation arising from cross border dealings.

The ministry said the 1986 treaty will continue to govern relations between Japan and countries other than Russia even after the new agreement enters into force with respect to Russia.
